Headline: LCD TV isn't all you'd expect

We've only bought one television, and that was 10 years ago when we moved to Sydney. a 21" Sony Trinitron. It died about the time when we stopped using it in 2001 - when we moved to using Freevo and an old 20" Digital RGB monitor (turns out it was made in 1995).

So last week, I realize that its getting darker, and all the indoor shows look like they've got no lighting. So, we buy a 32" Samsung LA32T51B? LCD TV...

It looks to me like the video entertainment industry is way more broken than the software industry. The LCD has both DVI and vga connectors but for some genius reason, the DVI connector is restricted to not displaying at the panel's native resolution. So vga runs at 1360x768, while DVI looks crappy at a scaled 1280x768 or 640x480. To top it off, neither the 'PC' mode, nor DVI support the normal pc bios text mode.

Brilliant!

I keep thinking in terms of respecting your customers - ATI doesn't respect us enough to provide the technical specs so that we who buy their product can run the OS of our choice.

Samsung don't respect us enough to not artificially restrict their device.

And the media producers don't respect us enough to let us choose where and when to view their content.

It's no wonder that there are so many independent people creating content, and that we're paying them so much attention.

the xorg.conf modeline we're using:

## SAMSUNG LE32R51B / LE26Rx / LE37R4 / LE40R5
### DisplaySize 349 196
Modeline "1360x768" 85.500 1360 1424 1536 1792 768 771 777 795 +Hsync +Vsync

Headline: Old-school programming techniques you probably don't miss

wow. At 36, I didn't think I was old enough to be an old school programmer, but that computer world article only lists things I have done (er, other than the punch cards).

I guess starting to program in school, when PC's were things like TRS-80's leads to having done some stuff smile

the Slashdot article has a few extra gems - no wonder 'programmers' have a bad reputation.

Headline: Business, Travel, Sugar and Home

There are a huge number of things that have happened in the last 2 weeks.

Will managed to weave all my seemingly disparate ideas into a cohesive story, which has culminated in my now being able to define a business plan for all the work I've been doing with TWiki, databases, structural and organizational change.

P&I are going to Zurich again, this time from November til February, and considering my disappointment at my lack of fotos and blog posts, i'm thinking about a daily post while there.

I gave up my sugar addiction - this week was hard, as there's the withdrawal, and the constant feeling of hunger as you adjust your bodies expectations, but as its really only a few teaspoons in my tea and coffee, it shouldn't be a big thing :/

AND... P&I just successfully offered a price on a 3 bedroom flat. Huge amount of stuff needs to happen before we leave, mortgage, conveyancing, inspections, moving in.... heaps of fun we hope smile

Headline: home.org.au has moved

for our upcoming trip to Zurich, i've moved the home.org.au server from the OpenBSD? box on ADSL to a web host hosted by http://www.qiq.com.au

they're cheap, and have ssh access so it's quite easy to configure TWiki.

  • no rcs so i'm running RcsLite?
  • no svn, so i'm going to have to update the code by hand frown

Headline: Moveable Type TWiki Skin

Its turned out that the licensing of the Css Zen Garden html, css and images pretty much prohibits me from distributing the CssZenGardenContrib?. So I've been looking for a suitable replacement - and the MoveableTypeContrib? is the first I've made.

I should be releasing it and blogging about it at http://blog.wikiring.com soon.

Til then, you can have a preview using the css-browser on MoveableTypeContrib?.

  • the removalists will do the hard work on Monday the 30th (argh, at 8am, and its the first day that daylight savings kicks in!!!!)

Headline: twiki.org subversion fixup

the svn server has been flakey in the last months, and I finally found the time to fix it.

First I converted it from BerkleyDB? to FSFS ( svnadmin create --fs-type fsfs repos), which showed up a problem that was due to a mixture of old and new seubversion libraries on the chrooted host. removed all traces of svn, and then re-installed, presto - it seems to work ok now.

its a shame that there's no rpm mechaism in ensim chrooted hosts, so next time will be similar i suspect.
