Headline: easy MTB trails in Northern Sydney After spending so much time in the shadows of the Uetliberg and Zuriberg, I've been missing being able to go for a quick easy offroad mountain bike ride. From Lane Cove, I've finally realised there's plenty around me today for example, I rode to the EasternArterial road entry of the Two Creeks Track which starts off as a fire trail, then changes into a nice easy, low traffic walking track prefect for the beginner MTB rider. It seems to cope well with the wet day we had today too buckets of fun from there to the Roseville bridge, and then an easy ride home. see nice map by the Ku ring gai Council (last changed by SvenDowideit)

Headline: VirtualBox host interface networking with wifi I normally use vmware server to do alot of system testing, but this week, I'm setting up to visit my parents, and vmware decided it didn't want to work on my notebook. I'm guessing its due to vmware's rather woeful debian support, and that this is a somewhat ruft debian testing system. VirtualBox uses NAT out of the box, meaning that I can't connect to the virtual machine from my notebook (just the reverse) so I went out looking for HOWTO's... And the best I found for my situation was the docoo. A small tweak later for debian's sake, and I get the following instructions resulting in two network interfaces on the VM eth0 NAT'ed to get out to the world, and a host host eth1 to enable me to get from my notebook to the VM. Install parprouted sudo apt get install parprouted create a vbox network startup script sudo vi /etc/network/if up.d/vbox network giving it the following (replacing $USER with the username ...
Headline: Good Calories, Bad Calories, or the nature of belief... Stumbling upon a blog post pointing to Quarks, I listened to an interview with Gary Taubes, a science writer promoting his latest book 'Good Calories, Bad Calories'. Basic premise that the medical profession has been proclaiming unscientific crap on the nature of weight gain and loss. That calorific intake and output (ie excercise) do not in fact have sufficient scientific basis as to be the core factors in weight gain / loss (or so Gary theorises). While I don't have the background to agree or dispute his argument, I do wonder about the paralells in the Software industry. We too, spend a lot of time and effort making changes without first studying the situation, devising metrics to determine the possible success or failure of proposed changes to solve proposed problems. Instead, we're driven by the propaganda of the manufacturers, telling us that the next version is better, the new language, toolset etc will be faster ... (last changed by SvenDowideit)

Headline: Riding in Sydney's inner west has changed over the last 2 years One ride I used to love doing, was hopiing on the M2 motorway's breakdown lane, and riding west. End goal is always Emu Plains and beyond, though often I cut it short, breaking off to goto Paramatta, Strathpine, or just Balkum Hills. So today I thought I'd do just that, dropping down Mowbray road, and then pootle along the M2....... think again :( It seems that they removed the breakdown lane from the freeway! So if you're in a car or truck, whatever you do, don't get a flat or break down. As you can see from the map, instead it was a long windy route along the 'M2 cycle detour', then a short stint on the MS to Winsor road, and then a similarly circuitous trip around the construction works on the Paramatta river. Still, a fun, and not too painful 60km, though with the stopping, and traffic hazards, at an average of 21km/h. Not quite what I had in mind. Lane Cove M2 Windsor rd Parramatta Hunters Hill Share ...
